Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has spoken out about being compared to South African artist Tyla.
The two musicians attracted attention online after both were nominated for the Best African Music Performance category at the 66th Grammys, where Tyla won the award, beating Ayra Starr and other Nigerian artists.
In her first public comments on the matter, Ayra Starr shared her thoughts during an interview with BBC Radio 1 Xtra.
She hammered that the comparisons do not affect her friendship with Tyla. She referred to Tyla as her “home girl” and called her her “G”.
In her words;
“Tyla is my homegirl, that’s my G. That doesn’t bother me at all. I don’t care about all of that.”
“Less noise, more music. Let’s support each other, like, why not, like afrobeats and African music is about to take over the world and we have to come together to be able to do that. There’s no need for comparisons.”
