“The Thing Stretched”: Tyla Reflects on Curving Kai Cenat With ‘We Friends Though’ Comment Going Viral

Tyla Breakfast

In March, during a livestream with renowned streamer Kai Cenat to celebrate the launch of her debut album, Tyla playfully declined his proposal for a date. When Tyla tried to soften the blow, she quipped, “We’re friends, though.

This friendly rejection, however, has persisted in the public sphere, with comedian Kevin Hart even referencing it during a recent sleepover stream with Kai and Druski.

Tyla graced The Breakfast Club on Thursday, June 13, where Charlamagne Tha God broached the topic of the viral friend-zoning incident. Tyla laughed it off, stating, “The thing blew up.” She and Charlamagne then moved on from the subject, with Tyla declining to engage further when Envy inquired about their current relationship status.

Tyla’s career took off last year with her hit single “Water,” which earned her the award for Best African Music Performance at the 2024 Grammys and reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. The sudden popularity of “Water” on TikTok left Tyla in a state of disbelief, as she was abroad at the time.

During her interview on The Breakfast Club, Charlamagne also brought up the debates surrounding Tyla’s identity as a ‘coloured person’ from South Africa. Tyla sought guidance from her team, and her publicist intervened to steer the conversation towards another topic.

Tyla’s rise to fame began with the release of her debut album and the viral success of “Water.” The amapiano track’s recognition at the Grammys and its charting on the Billboard Hot 110 took Tyla by surprise, as she was abroad when the song began to gain traction on TikTok.
