The ultra-premium whisky brand, The Macallan, has partnered with a Nigerian creative director and fashion entrepreneur Mai Atafo for his mentorship program; Fashion Conversations, which was recently hosted on April 2, 2023, in the city of Lagos. The initiative gives 40 young creatives the chance to speak with the designer about commercialization in the continent’s $31 billion fashion market and navigating one of the most promising fields in the world.
After a three-year break from the runway, The Macallan, a brand renowned for its dedication to perfection and quality, had earlier partnered with Atafo on his most recent collection, “The Atelier,” in November 2022.
The Macallan, which was established in 1824, is renowned around the world for its exceptional, ultra-premium single malt whisky. One of the first distilleries in Scotland to hold a legal license was this one.
The Macallan has consistently pursued perfection since it was founded by Alexander Reid, as seen by the brand’s exceptional quality and distinct personality.
With the opening of its renowned Speyside distillery in 2018, The Macallan began a new chapter in its history. Scotland, North America, and Spain all made significant contributions to the creation of The Macallan through the use of their individual natural raw resources, age-old techniques, and skilled labor.
During the event which took place at the ATAFO studio in Lekki, the Macallan sponsored Mai Atafo to encourage an interchange of crucial information that can enable young people to identify their roles in the business and flourish, in keeping with the whiskey company’s engagement in Africa’s fashion sector. The fashion mentorship initiative included seminars that covered subjects like “Guide to Running a successful fashion business in Nigeria,” “Fashion Commercialization,” and “Branding,” among others. It was designed to motivate and empower the upcoming generation of fashion creatives.
This initiative demonstrates Macallan’s interest in the African fashion market and Atafo’s mission to encourage the industry’s creatives. ‘Fashion Conversations’ was established in 2018 and has had tremendous success.
Mai Atafo passionately spoke to the young creative designers at the event about the value of having a well-thought-out company strategy and how to use it in the sector. He gave insights from his more than two decades of expertise and offered helpful recommendations on how to navigate the fashion industry.
According to Sunnewsonline, Mai Atafo said: “This is an opportunity for young creatives and entrepreneurs to gain insight and knowledge about the fashion industry. My goal is to create access for the next generation of masters in fashion to the right resources to make more informed decisions. The Macallan bringing these sessions to life enables us to reach more enterprising young people looking to harness their craft.”
The Macallan’s brand manager, Nigeria, Hammed Adebiyi, had also said in his statement: “The Macallan has been the hallmark of quality and distinctive character for nearly 200 years. Our unique taste and style, methods, and craftsmanship are some of the particular qualities that have made our whisky remarkable for years. This is also one of the reasons for our collaborations in the fashion industries across the world. It is important for us to invest in ensuring that for years to come, unique craftsmanship remains an important aspect of the industry. And there is no better way to do that than to invest in the future through forward-thinking initiatives such as this.”
And delightfully, this year’s second edition has been slated to take place in April at Maitama, Abuja.
